UNCA has a new academic honor called Community Engaged Scholars in which students complete a Public Service Project.
Those projects sometimes involve research requested by the community. Likewise, the university has Service- Learning Designated Courses, and sometimes in those courses professors are looking for research projects for their students. Possible examples of such projects include needs or strengths assessments, which community organizations may want to do but lack time or expertise to undertake. Or organizations may want to collect data to determine the effects of a program they are conducting.
Here is an example of a research question:
We are interested in knowing about whether our efforts to house homeless people are working from the standpoint of those receiving the housing. We would like students to conduct surveys with formerly homeless people about their satisfaction with their housing and their intent to stay in it. We also would like students to conduct open-ended interviews with those who are formerly homeless and find out whether housing has led to other major good or bad outcomes in their lives. We are concerned about graffiti in our community. We ask that students review the scientific literature in various disciplines to help us understand the root causes of the issue and whether there are scientifically proven solutions to treat and prevent the problem.
The other main type of work students do in Public Service Projects is a product for community organizations.
Those products can vary quite widely, but include things like handbooks, documentaries, manuals, artwork, software programs, public relations campaigns, a new accounting procedure, and so forth. Here is an example of an organization's request: : Our space includes an incredibly ugly corner that currently seems to invite vandalism: graffiti, littering, and loitering – all of which are bad examples for the youth we serve. We would like for a team of students to work with the at-risk youth we work with in our after-school program to study the space, design a new way to decorate it or adorn it artistically (perhaps with a solar-powered fountain) to beautify it, as well as encourage it to stay clean and nice for those who visit us.
Thank you so much for taking the time to fill out this form. The Key Center will be in touch with you soon.
