UNC Asheville Provides Free Tax Preparation Help

With April 15 approaching, people who make $50,000 or less can get free help preparing their federal and state income returns, thanks to trained UNC Asheville faculty, staff and students volunteering in the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Already this tax season, UNC Asheville volunteers have helped prepare more than 300 federal and state tax returns, and helped taxpayers file for more than $430,000 in refunds.

Stand Against Racism Events at UNC Asheville, April 20th

The national observance of Stand Against Racism Day is held on April 27. UNC Asheville moved the date a week early to avoid final exams. Read more about the events happening on campus through the Intercultural Center.

Community Service Scholarship Opportunity from State Farm Insurance; Deadline April 6th

This year State Farm Insurance, has generously agreed to once again provide a scholarship for a student attending a Big South institution. The scholarship is valued at $2,500 and will be awarded during our Spring Meetings. Award selection will be based primarily on the student’s participation in a leadership role in community service activities and volunteer work. A list of State Farm’s eligibility requirements are provided below.

AmeriCorps PACC-VISTA Food Policy Council Coordinator Position, Deadline for Applications April 9th

The AmeriCorps PACC*VISTA Member will work with Gettysburg College and the Adams County Food Policy Council (ACFPC) to increase low-income access to fresh fruits and vegetables, build the capacity of the ACFPC and support college-community activities focused on food security and local food systems.

ASHEVILLE — A study released last year detailed the area’s widespread problem with people struggling to put food on their tables. The problem has only gotten worse, according to the latest report by the same organization.
